CONTINENT / PRIVACY AND COOKIES
Privacy Policy
Continent is a non-commercial hobby project. This page explains exactly what the website and the game servers know about you, why they need it, how long it is kept and how you can have it removed. We do not sell data, we do not advertise and we do not profile players beyond what the game and the Squad Map need to work.
01
Who is responsible for your data
Continent is run by a private individual, not a company. That person is the data controller for everything described on this page, and is the only contact point for privacy questions, access requests and deletion requests.
This policy is written under the EU General Data Protection Regulation. Where an article of the GDPR is named below, it identifies the legal ground we rely on for that particular processing.
02
What we process, at a glance
Almost everything below happens only because you asked for it: you signed in, you joined a squad, you opened a ticket. The rest is the technical minimum needed to keep a website and a game server running safely.
03
Signing in with Steam
The website has no password registration. The only way in is Steam OpenID. When you click the sign in button you are sent to Steam, Valve authenticates you there and returns your Steam64 ID to us. We never see or receive your Steam password.
We then ask the Steam Web API for your public profile and store a copy of it so the site does not have to call Steam on every page view. The copy is refreshed periodically while you use the site.
What we store from Steam
- Steam64 ID
- Steam persona name, shown as your display name
- Steam profile URL and avatar image URL
- Country code, only if you made it public on Steam
- Real name, only if you entered it on Steam and made it public
- Steam account creation date
- Primary Steam group ID
- Persona state, meaning online, offline or away
YOU DECIDEIf a field is private on Steam, we never receive it. Your Steam privacy settings control what reaches us, and a change there takes effect for us at the next refresh.
The account the site creates for you
To make you a member of the website, a WordPress account is created where your username is your Steam64 ID, your display name is your Steam persona name, and your password is a random string that nobody, including us, ever uses. WordPress also requires an email address, so the site generates an internal placeholder in the form <Steam64>@dayzcontinent.com.
That placeholder is not a real mailbox and no mail is ever sent to it. We do not collect your email address. If you write to us, we obviously see the address you wrote from.
Who can see your profile
Your Steam persona name and avatar are visible to other signed-in members, for example in squad member lists and on the Squad Map. That is what makes the squad features usable. Your country code and real name are never shown to other players; they are stored so they can be displayed back to you on your own profile, and they are not visible to anonymous visitors or to search engines.
LEGAL BASISPerformance of a contract, Article 6(1)(b) GDPR. Signing in and using the site is the service you asked for, and it cannot be provided without this data.
04
Squad Map and in-game data
The Squad Map is optional. It processes data about you only if you sign in and use it. Two separate things are stored: what you deliberately create, and what your character does while you play.
Squads and markers
- Squad name, its owner, and its members identified by Steam64 ID
- Each member's role and status inside the squad
- Markers you create: title, note text, coordinates, icon and colour
- Whether a marker is private to you or shared with your squad, and who created it
Live position data
- Character position and facing direction on the map
- Character status: health, blood, water and energy
- Whether you have just spawned
- Whether you are in a vehicle, and what type
- In-game player name and Steam64 ID
- The server you are on, and the timestamp
Only members of the squad you are currently in, and site administrators, can see this. It is never public and it is never shown to enemy players. The live feed is held in an in-memory database table that is wiped whenever the server restarts. A compact last-known record is kept so a squad member who logs off does not simply vanish from the map, and that record is overwritten every time you play again.
IMPORTANTThis is game data, not real-world location data. It describes where your character stands on a fictional map. We do not collect your GPS location.
LEGAL BASISPerformance of a contract, Article 6(1)(b) GDPR. If you do not want your position shared, leave your squad or do not use the Squad Map.
05
Support tickets
If you use the support portal on the website, or write to support@dayzcontinent.com, we process your name or persona name, the email address you wrote from if you used email, and whatever you put in the message.
Tickets submitted through the support portal are stored on our own server, inside our own WordPress installation. They are not sent to a third-party helpdesk service and no external company reads them.
LEGAL BASISPerformance of a contract and our legitimate interest in answering you, Article 6(1)(b) and 6(1)(f) GDPR.
06
Logs, security and game moderation
Our hosting provider and web server automatically record technical data for every request: IP address, date and time, the requested URL, the HTTP status, the referrer and your browser user-agent string. The game servers similarly log connections, Steam IDs, chat, kills and administrative actions.
Continent runs BattlEye, the anti-cheat system used across DayZ. BattlEye is operated by BattlEye Innovations and processes your Steam ID for the purpose of detecting cheats. Bans issued through it are enforced on our servers.
We use these records to keep the service running, to investigate errors, and to detect and act on cheating, griefing and abuse.
LEGAL BASISLegitimate interest, Article 6(1)(f) GDPR. Our interest is operating a functioning, fair and secure game server. You may object at any time, but note that the servers cannot run without basic logging.

Cookies and similar technologies
A consent banner appears on your first visit, where you can accept or reject each category separately. You can change your decision at any time through the cookie settings link, and rejecting a category does not break anything except the feature it belongs to.
Necessary cookies, always active
These cannot be switched off, because the site does not work without them. They are strictly necessary, so no consent is required for them.
Functional cookies
These remember choices you make on the site, such as the server you last viewed on the map or your active squad view. Legal basis: your consent, Article 6(1)(a) GDPR.
Analytical cookies
We use Google Analytics 4 to see how many people visit and which pages they use. It sets cookies such as _ga and _ga_<id> and processes your IP address, an approximate location derived from it, device and browser information, and the pages you view. Google Consent Mode v2 is enabled, so full measurement data only reaches Google after you accept this category.
The provider is Google Ireland Limited, Gordon House, Barrow Street, Dublin 4, Ireland, with Google LLC in the United States as a sub-processor. Legal basis: your consent, Article 6(1)(a) GDPR, which you can withdraw at any time.
Advertising cookies
We do not use any. The category exists in the consent banner, but no advertising or marketing cookies are set anywhere on this website.
CONSENT LOGWhen you make a cookie choice, a record of that choice is stored on our own server so we can demonstrate compliance. These records are deleted after 365 days.
08
Who else your browser talks to
Loading a page makes your browser connect to a small number of external services. Those services necessarily receive your IP address and basic browser information, even before any cookie is set.
We also link to our Discord server. Discord is a separate service operated by Discord Inc. If you join it, Discord's own privacy policy applies, and we have no integration that sends your website account data to Discord.
Processors and where data is stored
TRANSFERSSteam and Google are United States companies. Signing in with Steam, and analytics if you consent to it, transfer personal data to the United States. Those transfers rely on the EU–US Data Privacy Framework and the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses.
09
How long we keep it
Nothing is kept indefinitely, and everything except ban records can be deleted earlier if you ask.
10
Your rights
Under the GDPR you can exercise any of the following at any time, free of charge. Write to support@dayzcontinent.com and we will answer within 30 days.
- 01Access
Receive a copy of the data we hold about you.
- 02Rectification
Have inaccurate data corrected. Steam profile fields are corrected at source, on Steam, and reach us at the next refresh.
- 03Erasure
Have your account and its data deleted.
- 04Restriction
Have processing limited while a dispute is being resolved.
- 05Objection
Object to processing based on legitimate interest, including logging.
- 06Portability
Receive your data in a structured, machine-readable format.
- 07Withdraw consent
Withdraw consent for analytics and non-essential cookies, without affecting processing that already happened.
- 08Complain
Lodge a complaint with the Hungarian supervisory authority, or seek a remedy before the competent court.
Deleting your account
Write to support@dayzcontinent.com and tell us your Steam64 ID or your Steam profile link. We delete your website account, the cached Steam profile data, your squad memberships and your markers. We may keep ban records and minimal log entries where we have a legal obligation or an overriding legitimate interest, and we will tell you if that applies to you.
HOW WE VERIFY YOUBecause we hold no email address for you, identity is verified through Steam. We may ask you to send the request while signed in to the site, or to prove control of the Steam account.
Supervisory authority
11
Security, children and changes
The site is served over HTTPS. Member accounts have no usable password, which removes an entire class of credential risk. Administrative interfaces and the game-server data feed are protected by API keys and WordPress capability checks, and access to raw player data is limited to the controller and one administrator.
No system is perfectly secure. If a personal data breach occurs that is likely to result in a high risk to you, we will inform affected users and notify NAIH as required by Articles 33 and 34 GDPR.
Children
The website has no age verification. DayZ itself is rated PEGI 18 and ESRB Mature, and a Steam account is required to sign in, so Valve's own age terms apply to that account. If you are under 16 you should only use the site with the consent of a parent or guardian. If we learn that we hold data about a child under 16 without such consent, we will delete it.
Changes to this policy
This policy will be updated as the site and the servers change. The last updated date at the top of the page always shows the current version, and significant changes are announced on the website or on our Discord.
